wondering about wordpress

I upgraded to movable type 3.15 this morning, so please let me know if you have any problems using the site. Not the most exciting way to spend a weekend and probably not the wisest thing to do on a lazy sunday morning – I was trying a new ftp program (the excellent filezilla) and accidentally deleted my css files. Oops!

I’ve also tinkered round with some anti-spam measures and removed the style switching functionality for now. That was a silly gimmick added purely for my own pleasure, but there is no point in having it if I don’t have the time or inclination to make different styles. Plus, in a rare lucid moment, I finally copped on that the switcher I had used meant that the css files were not being cached. Double oops!

I’m sure everyone hates these technical blogging updates but seeing as I’ve written this much (every word is a struggle) I’ll babble a bit more since this post actually has a purpose. I am considering changing to WordPress. I have heard good things and from installing a couple of times for other purposes it seems easy to work with. In truth, this feeble blog does not need the might of Movable Type and the complexity that its power imposes just causes me hassle. I have never had the time or inclination to fully analyse its workings. I am not a perly queen which does not help.

While I’m no PHP expert, I am a lot more comfortable with the PHP and MySql combo of WordPress. I figure I could customise WordPress with regard to templates and plugins more easily as a result. I’ve noticed that many more blogs are using WordPress now, so I would appreciate any advice from those using WordPress, particularly those who once used Movable Type. I promise I won’t blame you if it all goes wrong! 🙂

  1. I strongly recomend that you go for WordPress. I used MT for a while, and then I read about the advantages of WordPress, and was sold.

I’ve been using it for quite a while now and am very happy with it.

  2. i used MT once upon a time, switched to wordpress and have never looked back. templates etc are easy to manipulate. it’s hard to beat the dynamic updates. i heard that MT went dynamic after i switched but i don’t know what it’s like.

wordpress takes five minutes to install. they call it the “famous five minute install”. it’s also simple to import your old mt posts

  3. so it looks like 2-0 to wordpress so far. thanks for sharing your thoughts william and blúire.

i experienced the 5 minute install last week and was suitably impressed. although this host has fantastico auto-installer, which makes this a 5 second install 🙂

i have noticed the dynamic updating since i upgraded to version 3 of movable type. however, i think i’m currently operating a halfway house system where some parts are dynamic but most are still rebuilt into static pages?? but like i say, it’s got a mind of its own!
