How on earth did Liverpool do it? 3-0 down at half time and then they scored 3 goals in 5 minutes early in the second half to draw level. Finally, they were crowned Champions of Europe after a penalty shoot out. To think I was going to switch off at half time!

Poor Stevie Gerrard was almost in tears in the interview afterwards. After staying loyal to the cause for so long I was especially delighted to see him finally lift the famous trophy. Since the club have now won it 5 times, they get to keep it forever – impressive!

Since the demise of poor Notts Forest, I would like to foster a Premiership team to give me an interest until Forest return triumphantly to top flight football. For the past few seasons I have always had a soft spot for Arsenal. But after tonight, Liverpool might just have a new fan, and I suspect I’m not the only one.

However, I might leave them alone as I don’t want to jinx them. After all, when I first picked a team out, I was between Nottingham Forest and Chelsea. Forest were actually doing better at the time and just look at the way things have turned out!

Today Nottingham Forest were finally relegated to League One after losing 2-1 to QPR.

I have followed them for about ten years now and there has not been much to cheer about. I missed the heady days of league triumph and Euro. I started supporting them the season after they finished third in the Premiership. The following year they were the British team who got furthest in the European competitions. How things change!

Notts Forest now have the dubious honour of being the first European title winning team to play in the third division of their domestic league. Still, at least with the stupid naming system used in English football, it won’t seem like that. First you have the Premiership, then the Championship, then League One – you can call it whatever fancy name you like, it’s still the third division…

Forest’s manager, Gary Megson, summed things up (free registration required):

There is a lot of work to be done now. If Nottingham Forest were a patient it would be very ill at the moment. There is a lot of work to do to make it better.
