Summer Holidays in Switzerland

My blog is not the only thing I have been neglecting lately. With all the upheavel, I know I need a break, but I have not got around to planning the big summer holiday! We usually like to go in September/October, but I cannot take leave then this year, so August it is. This means that destinations will generally be hotter, busier and dearer. Obviously higher prices are a given, but I really want to avoid the heat (yes you read that right!) and lots of people. On the other hand, a weekend in the Aran Islands does not really appeal either! :)
So, after using an extremely complicated selection process (surfing the net for hours and hours) we have ended up with Switzerland as the prime contender. Iceland was looking great for a while (12 degrees!) but the flights alone were costing 650 euro. That’s per person.
Switzerland looks pretty and clean and Ronald is in residence so I’m all set to dust off my copy of Heidi and head off.
However, I don’t know much about it yet and while Geneva appeals, maybe Zurich would be better? Any advice would be much appreciated as would alternative holiday suggestions, especially less tropical and popular ones! :)

Mmm…be warned, Switzerland is gorgeous (and pricey) and can get pretty hot in the summer months too. How about Scandanavia? (Also pricey). Maybe Norway? Both the mountains and fjords are sights to fill the soul. The people are wonderful, food good and everywhere is so *clean*. …I sound like I’m from the Norwegian Tourist Board!

Hey Janine, sounds like a pretty good choice! Was only in Geneva before, so can’t comment on Zurich unfortunately! As for Geneva though, it’s beautiful, a really nice city with the Alps only an hour away so visiting there would be nice.

As for the non-tropical and less popular recommendations, I’d have to say Copenhagen is really nice as are both Gothenburg and Stockholm so I’d hightly recommend those three cities too!

Good to hear from you again anyway!

thanks for the tip jayne - if it is anything as nice as your lovely island of jersey i’m sold! :) your comment was mistakenly treated as spam for a few days. sorry about that! and thanks for the info aidan - sure i might just head back to the g in galway instead :) so scandinavia seems to be getting the thumbs up? but i thought it got quite sunny up there and never got dark in summer in some strange lands?? :)

Aidan’s right, Copenhagen is lovely too … Tivoli gardens are well worth a visit. Yes, Scandinavia can be sunny and warm too but hopefully not unbearable because of its more northerly location (further north than Galway!). I think you have to be very close to, or within the Arctic circle to experience perpetual day / night(?). My visits have only ever been further south.
Yes I noticed my last comment was being ’shunned’. That’s OK, I’m getting used to this. As far as I know we have good virus checkers here but I’ve been getting this reaction quite a lot lately, mostly with emails being hurled back at me. Perhaps I should change my perfume. :-D
