Oh, to have a little house!

I have been house hunting for nearly 3 months now, which is the biggest reason why my blog has been abandoned of late. I am extremely lucky for 2 reasons:

  1. I can afford to buy a house in Dublin and have a very generous budget at my disposal
  2. I am a first time buyer currently still living with my parents, so I am not stuck in any property chain and do not have to find a house by a certain date

Despite all this good fortune, house hunting is driving me demented! I had always been extremely envious of anybody who was lucky enough to be buying their own home. When I first started, I thought it was going to be so much fun. But it’s not! Apart from my own property search, my sister has also been house hunting recently. Most people in the small company where I work have bought houses in the last couple of years too. It’s great that so many people are showing such interest, but it means that there is no escape! Add in the daily e-mail alerts and myhome.ie monitoring, the newspaper property supplements on Thursdays and Sundays, and viewings on Saturdays and it’s easy to see how house hunting can take over your life.

I have just emerged from my 2nd lengthy and intense bidding war. On both occasions, I could not remain emotionally detached, regardless of how hard I tried. I fell in love with both houses, for entirely different reasons, and I felt so sad inside when each was lost. Yes, they are only bricks and mortar, and I’m very lucky that house hunting is the height of my worries. But even as a first time buyer, I now realise why buying a house is considered to be one of the major stresses of modern life. Yet, when you are spending several hundred thousand euro, if a house is only tugging at your head and not your heart, then you are bidding on the wrong home!
