Dublin Journey Planner

Aside from the brilliant boards.ie, the Irish site I find most useful at the moment is the Dublin Journey Planner from the Dublin Transportation Office (DTO). I thought I had blogged about this ages ago but apparently not! You enter a start and end address in Dublin, and it will map out the route by foot or by bicycle for you. It will even let you know how many calories you will burn in the process. :)

I had actually forgotten all about it for a while, but since I have been house hunting, it has come into its own. If the glossy brochure says a Luas station or village is a “short stroll” away, you can find out exactly how many minutes it will actually take. Yes, the mathematician in me loves the precise calculations, although I fear that they have not taken obstacles such as traffic lights and crowds into account! :)

This service is really handy when you don’t drive. If you are going somewhere you are not familiar with e.g. to go to a doctor or interview, you can see in an instant exactly where you need to go. The journey planner will also tell you the nearest Dart or Luas station to your destination. If Dublin bus routes are ever integrated into it, it really will be worth raving about!

That site sounds class………. maybe there’s a business opportunity to take their technology and implement the same for cities throughout the country - thinking Cork…. Limerick…. Galway….. maybe Waterford!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm…. something to mull on for the afternoon!

    Hi Janine

I´m travelling to Dublin, 2 weeks from now, and I would just like to know how´s the nightlife in Dublin..are Clubs open all night ?
My return flight is at 7 am Sunday and I don´t want to pay an extra nigth so I was thinking in clubbing until 5.30/6.00 am and then go straight to the airport

    thanks in advance

    Hi Nuno,

Being the shy and retiring type, I ain’t the one to ask! :)

But I am reliably informed that most clubs shut at either 3.30 or 4.30 am.

    Enjoy your trip to Dublin!

[...] WYSIWYG points us towards the Dublin journey planner, enter two street addresses and the journey planner will return the route to take. Nicely done, though it would be even nicer if it was done with google maps. http://www.dto-journeyplanner.ie.     Send this post to a friend [...]

thanks for the heads up on the site, its pretty cool, is there something like that for cars? I guess they are pushing the walk or cycle thing, it gets you there quicker anyway.

BTW walking burns more calories than cycling?? who knew.

So Janine, did you buy a house yet?
Or are you after applying for “I’m an adult, get me out of here!!!”
    :)

    Hi Janine,
Glad to have found this as I’m moving up to Dublin myself (& looking for web design work!). These things always seem to be implemented the wrong way, e.g. once you’ve got a route, there is no way you can forward on the url to a friend; your friend would have to go through the (badly designed) set of three steps to get to the same page. Also, you could build some really cool stuff onto this if it was also offered as a web service. Pity.
