Blog on or blog gone?
Some of the best Irish bloggers have called it a day lately – first Gavin, then the impossibly witty neuro and now the ever topical Potato!
With my blog idols fading fast, what hope is there for the likes of me?
With wysiwyg limping along all year, I should have put it out of its misery long ago. I’m still trying to work out whether it’s just the lack of anonymity putting me off, or whether I’ve had it with blogging altogether. Before the end of the year, I’m going to make a final decision and either blog far more regularly here, blog regularly anonymously elsewhere or stop blogging full stop.
I end this post with advance warning and an apology! I’m going to start putting a few Google adverts on my blog. Nooooo! I’m selling out! Aaggggh! After many years of enduring banners and pop ups on my personal home page at Geocities etc, I vowed that my personal domain, the one spot of the web over which I have total control, would *never* *ever* have ads of any kind on it.
However, my personal domain is also the one spot on the web that is my personal playground and test bed for my web development work. I can only really learn about Google Adsense if I try it out on a site of my own first, and preferably a site that gets more than a handful of hits, which means my poor pink blog has to be the guinea pig.
I don’t think the (occasional) content is worthy enough to warrant the inclusion of adverts, and I’m not trying (or expecting!) to cover hosting costs, so don’t feel obliged to click on any of them!
I’ll try to ensure they won’t be too obvious, although they may appear in different spots as I try strategies out. Even though putting ads on my blog is a very big deal to me, I’m really hoping that it won’t be for anyone else.

Once they aren’t pop-ups or flashing ads I can struggle on and deal with them:)

I wouldn’t expect to make much money. I’ve had google ads on my site for nearly two years now and so far the experiment has got me $37 on my account. The only trouble is that you need $100 before they will send you a cheque. Only another 4 years to go then.

old bloggers never die. they just turn into lurkers and occasional commentors.

How about a few short posts about your experience with adsense so people can read about how you get on??

thanks richard – i’ll try and sort that out, although i would not blame my anti-spam plugins for getting fed up every so often!
i’m lagging well behind most bloggers with my lack of adsense knowledge, but i certainly intend blogging about how i find it….
i did not realise you had to make 100 bucks before google pay out – thanks for the heads up martin – i’d say that could take me a decade! just as well i’m not in it for the money
fence – no flashing or popping i *promise* – the ads will be a lot more understated than the colour scheme!

I am still around, just taking an extended break to consider the future!
As for adsense, I’m my first year into it and surpassed $1,100 this week

Probably just a whitespace or something in the file.
Shouldn’t take a lass of your skills much to fix methinks

Good to know you’re alive and well Gav. Sure you can afford a break with all that Adsense income.
Hope the studies are going well too!
I think you overestimate my skills Richard! LOL Unless there were niggles with it all the time and it took until today for nice people to let me know, I can’t figure it out. My blog has been so neglected of late, that I have not even thought about changing anything config wise for yonks…. Even installing the latest plugin versions did not work, so I have just swapped to using something else for now and hopefully that might fix things until I have more time to investigate without opening the spam floodgates.
Thanks again for letting me know and at least I’ve finally got around to blogrolling you now – I thought I already had but I had you mixed up with AKA! sorry!

You should give the anonymous route a try – no worries about the other half reading too much into what you say, bare your soul without fear of pointing fingers, tell the world how shitty your boss really is… without mentioning his name of course.
It’s unbelievably therapeutic… saves me a fortune on psych bills.
