Virgin Digital Competition: How Many Bands can you Find?
Update 29 Nov 2005: The original Virgin link no longer seems to have the picture. It should still be available here. I have also been told that Virgin have claimed that there are actually 74 bands in the picture since my original post. Perhaps, with all the excellent guessing and varied interpretations in the comments below, they have realised that there were some other bands included by accident. 
The Virgin Digital Find the 72 Bands competition is the cleverest piece of marketing I have seen in ages. If you haven’t already got the picture in an e-mail forward, you can get it at the Virgin Digital site.
Guaranteed to provide endless hours of amusement and head scratching, it’s a large image which contains graphic representations of 72 band names. For example, there are 2 pink scissors with pink ribbons in the middle of the photograph which represent the Scissor Sisters (I hope! 
).
I’m not even halfway there yet! I’ll leave the ones I’ve figured out with a little help from my friends as a comment. I won’t leave explanations for the moment to avoid spoiling all the fun and to spare my blushes if I’m wrong How many have you got?

I agree on the Kennedys.
The thing about this is: at what stage do you stop reading something into *everything*. Sure, some of them are really obvious but how abstract do you have to go to get 72? Is the gorilla in the middle letting out a Primal Scream? If you can have the Streets and the Doors, why not the Walls, or are they too obscure for a UK competition? If that’s acceptable, what about the (window) Frames? Even if you see things that don’t appear to represent anything, you can probably find a band with the right name if you google hard enough. Exhibit A: The Pineapples. That poor postie in front of Madonna looks like he has a bad back, too – surely not a case of the dreaded Postman Syndrome.
Actually, I’m not quite correct on that point – Google can’t find any band called “The Four Storey Buildings”, unfortunately.
. . . but there are definitely at least Four Non Blondes in the picture, so that’s score 1 to me

Don’t agree on the Blues Brothers. Neither Jake nor Elroy carried a guitar and in keeping with the spirit of the competition they’d need to be blue. The idea is it’s not a likeness of the artistes but a representation, a visual pun – you could argue that the 2 figures kissing could be Tatu whereas I think they represent Kiss.

I don’t think so, otherwise they would have put any old Jet (eg 747) in the pictusre. As with the Dead Kennedys, I think those planes are specifically B-52s for a reason.

@Bruce the Doc – “Steps” – hmm . . . there seems to be a gap in my memory when I try to remember a band by that name.
As for the kissing couple – look at their hands – couldn’t it be The Strokes too?
It really is all very ambiguous – I can’t see any agreement on a definitive list happening at all.

Presidents of the United States of America. Sorry but I dont think so. Call me stupid being from England and all but wasnt only JFK president. I believe Bobby was killed while Senator in California, therefore not a President.

Nickelback is a no go. The coin says on it half dollar (50 Cents). If I remember correctly a Nickel is only 5 cents with a dime being 10 cents and a quarter obviously being 25 cents.
So the fact the the coin says that it is a half dollar clearly means it is supposed to be 50 Cent.

The numerous pavements are the band pavement, the woman with child on the left hand side is madonna, the 5tvs with heads are the talking heads, the two guys in front are the killers, there is also the subways on the right. the police are in the middle, the house full of people is crowded house, and all the guys in white on the left are the manic street preachers, i think the whole thing is a phantom planet, and that the sky represents pink

recieved this picture today, and feel i can put two large questions to rest.
1] could the calender (august 2006) located underneath some smiley oranges be a reference to “the futureheads” and

ok, i decided i can’t be bothered waiting for people to guess, so i will enlighted you all.
First of all, i don’t believe it is a maniken, due to the deliberate positioning of it on an angle high up which suggests it is lightweight and hence – a blow up doll. And if anyone has seen the look on the face of a blow up doll, you will agree with me when i suggest that i strongly believe it is the ” Goo-Goo Dolls”.
What do you think?

so say it is a doll… what makes you think “goo goo” its like suggesting the crows represent “counting crows” instead of “the black crowes” there is nothing in the picture to represent counting!! i still think the doll/manikin is strictly an object used to display the bikini, which being bright red stands out in contrast, thus “bikini red”

I think I’ve answered my own question so, anyway:

Then you have to click on “click here to play”. It definitely says 74 now.
The competition goes until December 31 and it says you only need to get ONE correct to be in the draw, so finding all 74 gets you precisely the same thing that finding one does.

Just a thought: The seeds around the smashed pumpkin could also be “Bad Seeds”… who are also signed on by Virgin.
My first thought of the picture in the window, was of course Madonna. Now, I doubt that it is! Madonna is not signed with Virgin! She owns her own record label… so why would Virgin put her in their picture?? I think we need an alternative for this one!

okay, i’m gonna stop reading about this and looking at that damned picture once and for all because i think the one way to actually figure out which bands are represented is to research the label they are on. this is a Virgin records marketing campaign so, of course, they are going to use the bands that are signed to Virgin! the first aritist i sought out was Madonna as i know she’s on Virgin Records and i had no trouble spotting her.

I’m sorry people, but some of you are looking way to far into these. As someone else stated, it’s a VISUAL PUN. Yes, you could interpret the birds in the picture as The Byrds… but you have to consider the artist chose to draw some Eagles and Crows specifically…which means they are not the Byrds, but The Eagles and Black Crowes… get it? A picture of John Kennedy could be Dead Prez or Presidents of the United States, but then there’s a picture of Robert Kennedy below…obviously The Dead Kennedy’s.
A gun with a pink dildo attached… where’s the velvet? How does that make it ‘Velvet Revolver’? If it was Velvet Revovler, it would have velvet drawn into it somewhere. Or even a revolving door made of velvet… Get it?
The coin is OBVIOUSLY a 50 cent coin (at least obvious to us yanks). So please take our American word for it and trust us on that one.
If the artist meant to draw the Safaris (which is too obscure in the first place) and not the Beach Boys, they probably would have drawn people dressed in a safari outfit. If the artist meant to put in Hothouse Flowers, they probably would have drawn a little hothouse somewhere with flowers in it. Or maybe a flower that was sweating or something to that effect. See how it works? Not that hard.
Now, other symbols are harder to interpret, and could be multiple things… the rat? Could be Ratt? No one’s mentioned that. I would guess Modest Mouse, but it’s obviously a rat and not a mouse, and no other symbol to make it ‘modest’.
And no offense, but all these bands, even the punk/alternative ones like The Dead Kennedys or Cornershop, are known, established bands on major labels (though I’m not sure if they are really all Virgin artists… GnR is on Geffen, or used to be). So there aren’t going to be any indie/ alternative/ underground artists represented here. Remember, this puzzle is for the masses.
I like seeing the debate and interpretations, but some of you go so far off the mark, it’s actually kind of ruining the game.
And still no one has yet to figure out the 3 women running from the ‘rolling stones’. Maybe that’s not a band but scared groupies? lol.

FIRST OF ALL: I was viewing the cropped version and thought everybody was crazy referring to Skinny Puppy ( was the postman bending over to pet the little f#*cker behind the mailbox ?); and I didn’t see no cake or scorpion either.
SECOND: I’m 48; therefore, I saw Monkeys instead of Gorillaz, Mountain instead of Cypress Hill, The Zombies instead of White Zombie, and I misconstrued The White Stripes as a definite Beatles-a-la-Abby Road reference.
THIRDLY: (In the anal-stretch-of-the-imagination portion of our show): Couldn’t the TV’s in the window also stand for Television along with Talking Heads? The stripes on the Zep also refer to Dread Zeppelin? The girls kissing on the corner could signify The Queers; And that inflatable doll in the window definitely said New York Dolls to my mind. ( But I was also seeing Crowded House as Birthday Party). What had me going most was the Smashing Pumpkins figure looking like a dead ringer for The Clash LP cover and it surprised me that no one else made mention.
…..Perhaps I am mad, after all.

I realize it’s too late but I just recieved this pic and read most of these blogs. Couldn’t the blurred guy also be “Pink Floyd”? They blurred him to make him a non specific male (Floyd is a male name) and he’s wearing pink. Also, the first thing I thought of when I seen the White Stripes was the “Beatles” . They are so well known for that famous picture of them walking across the road with the white stripes.

I do not think it’s 50 cent, its The ramones. This is about rock n roll, not rap. If so, there would be more rap artist along w/ 50. Think about the geonra of music here. Baz, getting too creative. which is better than I can say for some. For those who say loving spoonful, there is nothing in the spoon, it is just a spoon. Those of you who pluralise something, make sure there is more than one. p.s. you cant have The Band w/ only two people. It was a 5 man band originally. This is fun, I could go all day long.

I have seen the official answeres applied to the pictures. Some of you are very creative in the name of the bands. All you have to do is find the bands that are signed to virgin records, or once were, or a virgin affiliate. Then you have something to go on. Keep in mind that Virgin records is a British company. Think of mostly English bands and this will help you out. And no, The Superfurry Animals is not an answer. The Manic Street Preachers is not an answer (Im from the U.S. and a real avid music fan, …. Ah who the hell are they?) The coin is a U.S. 50 Cent Piece, so who else could it be? I like em a lot but it is not The Ramones and its not Jonny Cash. Sadly enough; the graet rock and roll game has more than just rock and roll. It has rappers and pop artist of today in the picture as well. Good luck and happy hunting. P.S. There are only 74 official answers!

I was looking at this poster at a school that I visited recently and there are some things that are easier to see when it’s a big, clear poster. The Numbers on the door next to the BeeGees is D12, and the doors on the far right side of the picture have the number 311. Also, the picture of the two Kennedy’s is in fact the Dead Kennedy’s, but the door on the far right have the presidential seal on it, so Dead Kennedy’s and Presidents of the United States are right.

Ok like you all I have a look, leave it for a bit and come back to it, I have sat here tonight and read a lot of replies but I just gotta have a spit!
It is a battle of the bands!!!! a band has more than one member in it!
So officially stuff like, Seal, 50cent, madonna, jewel etc etc are not bands!!!!!!!! they are solo artists.
I know others have wrote this but I had to say something cause reading half of theses replies has been chitting me to tears!!!!!
Look closely at the 3 girls running from the stone. They are wearing roller skates.. hence roller girls maybe? It is so bloody obvious that the tv’s with heads is talking heads, the green plant down the botton left of the screen, I would lean more towards THE TRIFFIDS instead of Bush.. it isn’t really looking like a bush to me. The someone wrote well maybe the gorillas aren’t the band gorillas but the band the monkees…. Geez for $%&* sake how bloody obvious is it!!!!!! I have the picture that is half cut, someone said maybe the bracelet is jewel.. (Jewel is a solo artist so it can’t be) the way it looks to me it seems more like a flashy watch or necklace with a chunky front stone in it. I gotta stop half of you are driving me bloody nuts with plainly obvious stupid answers!

I suppose that Seal, 50cent, Madonna, jewel etc have people backing them up w/ air instruments that are plugged into your ear. I suppose the record industry could use you to determine record contracts. I will say that 50 cent is actually The Ram ones. If you can find someone other than seal for the poster w/ the seal and ball let us know. You seem to be so brilliant about what the symbolism is not, back it up w/ a replacing “Band”. By the way, who the fuck says’s “GEEZ”? You’re an episode of Leave It to Beaver.

Everyone is saying great white for the shark… I think its ocean colour scene (its an ocean, its ocean coloured and its a scene from jaws). Also the goldfish beside the chain in a box cold be goldie lookin’ chain…

OK, so far we have thought of 59 bands…
We have 1 no one has thought of…
Over to the right of the picture it is very dark
We think this could be “The Darkness” — Ali tells me to point out that it was her idea–
Also, a friend of mine said that the watermellon with the sunnies on could be “Oasis”…but we’re not too sure about that one :S
Also, what everyone has been refering to as “The Carpenters”…we think, could be “The View”
I (caz) seem to think that there is a band called “the Boulders”…or something like that…any comments?
And we both seem to think that there is a band called “traffic” or something which could be either the traffic lights at the left of the picture or the cars in the middle.

I first need to know if the picture is complete or not. The boulders are THE ROLLING STONES. The group of cars are THE CARS.

Oh my God, I can’t believe you people have been ranting on about this for over 3 years!!! I only got sent it yesterday, spent a couple of hours looking at it and already have over 30!! I must admit, looking at the answers, there are a lot I haven’t heard of!!
Some of the vivid imaginations you lot have for some of the answers given on this page are amazing.
I found this on another site (don’t think it’s been mentioned here!). I know it’s the cropped version and I know it only has 70 answers, but it looks a bit more “official” (well as “official” as the Daily Star can be!! lol
