Virgin Digital Competition: How Many Bands can you Find?
Update 29 Nov 2005: The original Virgin link no longer seems to have the picture. It should still be available here. I have also been told that Virgin have claimed that there are actually 74 bands in the picture since my original post. Perhaps, with all the excellent guessing and varied interpretations in the comments below, they have realised that there were some other bands included by accident. 
The Virgin Digital Find the 72 Bands competition is the cleverest piece of marketing I have seen in ages. If you haven’t already got the picture in an e-mail forward, you can get it at the Virgin Digital site.
Guaranteed to provide endless hours of amusement and head scratching, it’s a large image which contains graphic representations of 72 band names. For example, there are 2 pink scissors with pink ribbons in the middle of the photograph which represent the Scissor Sisters (I hope! ;)).
I’m not even halfway there yet! I’ll leave the ones I’ve figured out with a little help from my friends as a comment. I won’t leave explanations for the moment to avoid spoiling all the fun and to spare my blushes if I’m wrong How many have you got?

never heard of several of the bands which does not help. i should still have got cowboy junkie though. i find the picture is a bit blurry in places (maybe it’s just my old eyes? :)) but i was staring at thecowboy for ages going hmmmm… he looks like he could be injecting something… LOL

I agree on the Kennedys.
The thing about this is: at what stage do you stop reading something into *everything*. Sure, some of them are really obvious but how abstract do you have to go to get 72? Is the gorilla in the middle letting out a Primal Scream? If you can have the Streets and the Doors, why not the Walls, or are they too obscure for a UK competition? If that’s acceptable, what about the (window) Frames? Even if you see things that don’t appear to represent anything, you can probably find a band with the right name if you google hard enough. Exhibit A: The Pineapples. That poor postie in front of Madonna looks like he has a bad back, too - surely not a case of the dreaded Postman Syndrome.
Actually, I’m not quite correct on that point - Google can’t find any band called “The Four Storey Buildings”, unfortunately.
. . . but there are definitely at least Four Non Blondes in the picture, so that’s score 1 to me

Don’t agree on the Blues Brothers. Neither Jake nor Elroy carried a guitar and in keeping with the spirit of the competition they’d need to be blue. The idea is it’s not a likeness of the artistes but a representation, a visual pun - you could argue that the 2 figures kissing could be Tatu whereas I think they represent Kiss.

I don’t think so, otherwise they would have put any old Jet (eg 747) in the pictusre. As with the Dead Kennedys, I think those planes are specifically B-52s for a reason.

@Bruce the Doc - “Steps” - hmm . . . there seems to be a gap in my memory when I try to remember a band by that name.
As for the kissing couple - look at their hands - couldn’t it be The Strokes too?
It really is all very ambiguous - I can’t see any agreement on a definitive list happening at all.

Presidents of the United States of America. Sorry but I dont think so. Call me stupid being from England and all but wasnt only JFK president. I believe Bobby was killed while Senator in California, therefore not a President.

Nickelback is a no go. The coin says on it half dollar (50 Cents). If I remember correctly a Nickel is only 5 cents with a dime being 10 cents and a quarter obviously being 25 cents.
So the fact the the coin says that it is a half dollar clearly means it is supposed to be 50 Cent.

The numerous pavements are the band pavement, the woman with child on the left hand side is madonna, the 5tvs with heads are the talking heads, the two guys in front are the killers, there is also the subways on the right. the police are in the middle, the house full of people is crowded house, and all the guys in white on the left are the manic street preachers, i think the whole thing is a phantom planet, and that the sky represents pink

recieved this picture today, and feel i can put two large questions to rest.
1] could the calender (august 2006) located underneath some smiley oranges be a reference to “the futureheads” and
2] i believe the manikin is specificaly targeted at a band called “bikini red” these would seem to be blatanly obvious answers, and thus right in the spirit of things!!

ok, i decided i can’t be bothered waiting for people to guess, so i will enlighted you all.
First of all, i don’t believe it is a maniken, due to the deliberate positioning of it on an angle high up which suggests it is lightweight and hence - a blow up doll. And if anyone has seen the look on the face of a blow up doll, you will agree with me when i suggest that i strongly believe it is the ” Goo-Goo Dolls”.
What do you think?

so say it is a doll… what makes you think “goo goo” its like suggesting the crows represent “counting crows” instead of “the black crowes” there is nothing in the picture to represent counting!! i still think the doll/manikin is strictly an object used to display the bikini, which being bright red stands out in contrast, thus “bikini red”

I think I’ve answered my own question so, anyway:

Then you have to click on “click here to play”. It definitely says 74 now.
The competition goes until December 31 and it says you only need to get ONE correct to be in the draw, so finding all 74 gets you precisely the same thing that finding one does.

Did anyone else get Paul McArtney? Dunno if anyone remembers but in the late sixties there was a rumour that Paul had died and some some sort of lookalike or something replaced him. Therefore the Grim Reaper(death) walking across the zebra crossing(abbey road) must be Paul.

Funny, this is the first time that I’ve seen other people’s answers. And yet, I had them all figured out already. (Except for the really far-fetched answers from desperate people)
Anyway… I also had ‘Kiss’ for the 2 girls kissing, but my other option for them is ‘Modern Lovers”. “Trapped” and “Crowded House” could apply to the 2 different people-filled windows. Also… something no one else noticed… the entire picture is an ‘Enigma’ by definition!
