sudoku

I managed to leave my cross stitch down today for long enough to have a go at a Su Doku puzzle.

These logic puzzles have been causing quite a stir in recent months. While British newspapers like The Telegraph have been publishing them for a while, the craze has now reached Ireland. The Sunday Tribune has been including the puzzles for about the last 6 weeks and I believe that the Indo is now featuring one daily?

The aim is to complete a partially filled 9 x 9 grid so that each digit only appears once in each row, column and each 3 x 3 box. My Mum has been talking about it for a while so I finally had a go today. I can definitely see the attraction although I don’t think it will take over my life!

I am amazed that it has become so popular though. The beauty of it is that the idea is so simple. Although most people see a bunch of figures and run a mile, they will have a go at this because it has nothing to do with figures. They could be colours or even animals in the squares; the approach would be the same.

However, it is still a mathematical puzzle. It appeals to me since I like logic games but I am pleasantly surprised that so many are finding this addictive. When so few people like studying Maths in school, maybe all that is wrong is the ways in which it is taught. The reaction to Su Doku shows that there is an inner mathematician in all of us screaming to be let out.
