Today is Mother’s Day. Although I think most annual holidays are just Hallmark days, Mother’s Day is an exception. I was actually quite taken aback that I was alone in this view, when discussing it with friends recently. Everyone else thought it shouldn’t exist at all!

Of course, the greeting card companies and florists et al have commercialised the day out of all proportion. However, the tradition of Mother’s Day does go back a long way. In any case, I think that the very least Mothers deserve is a day to officially recognise all that they do for us every day.
