is anyone out there?
I’ve been tuning into RTE’s latest religious offering,Is Anyone Out There?, after er on Sunday nights of late.
The show is presented by Anna Nolan, one of the original Big Brother contestants. Despite being one of the presenters of the appalling The Afternoon Show, she makes a decent job of this. The end result is quite fascinating, even for an agnostic/atheist/hopeless case like me.
Following the successful format of Paddy O’Gorman’s O’Gorman’s People, Anna simply wanders around a certain part of the country each week, engaging them in conversation to ask their thoughts on a certain topic.
In the first show she travelled to Limerick to ask people if they believed in God. This led to all sorts of stories including one girl’s account of her brain tumour and a former IRA convict’s near death experience. This week’s vox pop from Mayo concentrated on good and evil. One man thought that children were much more evil these days. He blamed this on women continuing to work after they had children. He also believed everything had gone wrong since they let girls into pubs. He eventually conceded that this was not so terrible, once they controlled themselves. Priceless.
