Forest fall again

Nottingham Forest shattered by 4th relegation in 12 yearsToday Nottingham Forest were finally relegated to League One after losing 2-1 to QPR.

I have followed them for about ten years now and there has not been much to cheer about. I missed the heady days of league triumph and Euro. I started supporting them the season after they finished third in the Premiership. The following year they were the British team who got furthest in the European competitions. How things change!

Notts Forest now have the dubious honour of being the first European title winning team to play in the third division of their domestic league. Still, at least with the stupid naming system used in English football, it won’t seem like that. First you have the Premiership, then the Championship, then League One – you can call it whatever fancy name you like, it’s still the third division…

Forest’s manager, Gary Megson, summed things up (free registration required):

There is a lot of work to be done now. If Nottingham Forest were a patient it would be very ill at the moment. There is a lot of work to do to make it better.

Of course, Forest couldn’t just go down gracefully and quietly, gifting my Gills the three points they required for safety on Sunday. Looks like we’ll be seeing you in League One next season :(
