flickr fears

It’s been rumoured for a while but it was finally confirmed yesterday that Yahoo! has bought flickr.

This would have to happen about a week after I decided to finally start using it! As a self confessed Google gal, I was hoping they might buy it and I could look forward to flickr getting even funkier and some swish integration with Picasa.

Instead, I’m feeling a little nervous. It’s heartening that Yahoo’s Jeremy Zawodny claims that one of the keys to flickr is that:

it doesn’t spam me with graphical/animated/flash ads or try to unexpectedly pop up any sort of window

Plus, Yahoo! have been making great strides lately. Their newly launched Yahoo! Search Developer Network looks interesting and even this Googler has been finding Yahoo! more relevant for local Irish queries of late.

However, there are too many examples of great applications being tarnished by Yahoo! for my liking. When Geocities was bought up it wasn’t long before intrusive banners were unavoidable. Yahoo! also ruined egroups for me when they took it over; it quickly became more about adverts than messages. I installed Yahoo! Messenger a while back and quickly got rid of it after it seemed to install bits and pieces all over my machine.

I *really* hope Yahoo! will make flickr even more fantastic rather than frustrate its fans.

  1. not bloody likely, even yahoo groups got progressively (regressively?) worse. to the point that you had to click through about 2 or 3 screens of ads to actually read a message.
