Dublin to Poland by bus

Saturday’s Irish Times (paid subscription required) featured the new daily Bus Éireann route from Dublin to Warsaw.

The launch of the service reflects the exponential growth of the Polish community in Ireland. Irish Times columnist Carl O’Brien made the journey to Warsaw and spoke to many of the mainly young highly educated Polish migrants on the way. They seem happy enough here, but working hard in lower-end jobs away from friends and family to earn multiples of what they could back in Poland seems a hard life to me.

At €199 for the return trip, it’s cheaper than flying. The one way charge of €139 is less attractive. The Bus Éireann press release boasts of "coaches equipped with on-board toilets, reclining seats, air-conditioning and panoramic windows", but I would not fancy the 42 hour trip! Lucky that I’m a reasonably well-off Dubliner with a pretty cushy life…

It would probably be cheaper and quicker for them to fly Ryanair via london. I did one of those bus journey when I first arrived in London, I hadnt got paid yet and it was christmas — Ł18 return for bus as oppose to Ł3300 for a flight. It seemed like a good idea at the time. 18 hours later I arrived back home in Galway. never again! I book way in advance these days.

18 hours on a bus at christmas - ouch!
199 ain’t that cheap either and when you consider the time the journey takes, i think you would need to be really strapped for cash to not fly…

Ah yes but think of the *value* - it’s less than a fiver an hour - much better value than flying!!
