A Galaxy of Irish Blogs

I meant to blog about this ages ago but even if everyone already knows about it, I still want to highly recommend a visit to Planet Of The Blogs. This Irish blogs aggregator was launched earlier this month by John Breslin and is another bright idea from Boards.ie.

Irish blog resources seem to be like buses: there are none for ages and then 3 come along together. Another aggregator irishblogs.ie started recently and there is now a Yahoo! group devoted to Irish blogs courtesy of Bernie.

However, I’m most excited about POTB. It is refreshing to see it taking an inclusive approach, seeking to cover as many Irish blogs as possible, rather than the snobby "we will only include you if you link back to us with our logo and we think you’re suitable" attitude of irishblogs.ie. What’s more, POTB actually works! :)

POTB is also searchable which makes it far more useful than a mere aggregator, and with nearly 300 blog feeds on the go already, I’m hoping that it will quickly become the definitive focal point for Irish blogs on the web.

I’m already wondering how I lived without it. Instead of 2 lengthy unsynchronised feed lists at home and at work (I don’t like bloglines), I can now catch up on all the goss in one go at POTB.

Great work lads! It’s amazing what monkeys can do these days ;)

Found out abour Planet of the Blogs a few days ago. It is very handy isn’t it? But you’ve just alerted me to the Yahoo group, so I’d best head off and check it out.

I understand you comments, however Irish Blogs was always meant to be inclusive of all Irish blogs.

Also we never required people to include the tag - although it was a way of people letting us know they existed without requiring their email address. Now we explicitly give both choices. If we find an Irish blog ourselves we list it (whether or not it has an image button).

Our tongue-in-cheek FAQ was written at a time when there was commentary about doing aggregators along the lines “how do you know if a blog is Irish or not” - and this was seen as a barrier to setting one up. We wanted to avoid that debate as a barrier to setting up an aggregator. In any case it seems the debate has moved on.

Thanks for you comments. It has helped us to make our site more clear to our users.
