a fresh start
happy new year! how many new year’s resolutions have you broken so far?
my main one is not to swear. i have lapsed several times already so i’ll have to settle for swearing less and work on that instead!
i decided rudolf was wrecked so the christmas layout is no more. instead i’ve gone for a summery floral look entitled “fresh”, totally appropriate for the month of january! ![]()
update!
credit where it’s due: i found the gorgeous photo in my banner at the very excellent stock.xchng. it was taken by Tom Spitznas. the font used in the banner is heather by mike allard.
i have also introduced style switching or skinning to wysiwyg. on the right hand side menu, under “site stuff”, you can now “choose a colour scheme”. so if you don’t like the new look, you can give the older basic “plain pink” layout a try. there may even be some anti-pink layouts (shock! horror!) added soon so keep your eyes peeled…. the benefit to readers of this gimmick? em… ok… it’s pretty but pointless and pretty anal of me but hey - it’s my blog!
thanks to synapse for the helpful tutorial on how to implement it.
so all the best for 2005. i can’t believe how fast the days and months and years are going. it’s another new year already! the bad news is that means my christmas holidays are almost over
on the plus side, i get to put up my miffy calendar ![]()

love what you’re doing with the css. haven’t really got my head round css placement yet, will have to be a 2005 new year’s resolution - ie a resolution i’ll make at the end of 2005
*really* love the top graphic of the flowers

thanks a lot - i’m not a designer so i’m glad you like it
plus, thanks for pointing out the flowers! alas, i didn’t take that picture and that reminds me to give the appropriate credit asap! i remembered the font but forgot the flowers - oops!
as regards css, i’m still learning but i love it. of all the web dev stuff i’m into, css rocks most of all

Janine,
Can’t remember how I came across your blog (probably via gavin’s blog) but I’ve been subscribed (via bloglines) for a while.

Grrr. you’re making me jealous with all this love and attention. i’ll have to have a redesign meself at this rate! it does look fabby tho.
January 3rd, 2005 at 8:09 pm
thanks caoimhe - for the compliment and for making me think of chicken nuggets
and mish, you know that one flower photo that i didn’t even take could never equate to the appeal of witty content and fluffy penguins!
January 3rd, 2005 at 8:10 pm
well technically penguins are more furry than fluffy…..
January 3rd, 2005 at 8:20 pm
oh yeah? well tell that to google http://www.googlewar.com/search.cfm?q1=fluffy+penguin&q2=furry+penguin
January 4th, 2005 at 5:58 pm
Happy 2005!
The ‘fluffy’ vs. ‘furry’ debate isn’t as easily sorted as you might think:

I came back to this thread a few times dying for someone to respond to the Google War post………………..hey I’m writing an essay, nothing better to do…
So now Janine………whats your call..fluffy/furry???
January 4th, 2005 at 7:54 pm
g’wan the daithi! you’re so there with the furry penguins call. anyway *i* should know, all of my penguins are furry - i don’t care what some evil capitalist search engine tells me. ha.
January 4th, 2005 at 9:07 pm
fair play for fighting the furry fight but face facts: the fight in question is that of the exact phrase “fluffy penguin” against “furry penguin”, and when you search for these terms in quotes, furry fades fast!
besides, if you won’t take the word of an evil search engine (slightly harsh since they will soon be launching a charitable foundation!) is the word of the british antarctic foundation good enough?
http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/Living_and_Working/Diaries/Halley/2002/11_chick.htm
btw i’m getting very giddy with all these comments
January 4th, 2005 at 9:12 pm
now penguin ‘chicks’ are entirely differnt to mammy and daddy penguins. fair enough i’ll admit to the young ‘uns as being on the fluffy side of furry, however give it a few years and it develops into more of a dense fur type setup. oh hell, i should be writing an essay
January 4th, 2005 at 9:32 pm
ah yeah change your tune now you’re a loser
i could go on and on because even excluding chick references, fluffy still wins… but i’m scaring myself now with all my search engine nit picking - think i’ve spent a bit too long at work eek! just be warned that fluffy, furry or both, if you think google is evil, penguins are not too far behind
